This is rather iffy! It can apply changes to areas of the document you were previously happy with I would advise using it _only_ if you are certain sure you have _no_ direct formatting applied (and which of us can put hand on heart and say that? There is always something!). If such controls are changed in a style, you need to reformat the document using /Format /Autocorrect. This is why they work when you are editing a paragraph. It's a bit tedious (and I am under a deadline), but at least I can get it done.Īs I understand it, the situation is this: if a paragraph is manipulated, the layout controls are applied. I tried doing it for the paragraph style as a default, but it seemed to do nothing. On some pages I have to turn off Orphan control. In all cases, attempts to fix this result in no change OR two additional lines instead of just the one I want. Where's the happy medium? In all cases where the page bottoms are not even it is always just one line shy. it's take the two additional lines (with a squished footer) or be one line short (with a proper footer). But Writer seems to be telling me its all or nothing here. What I find strange about this is that I only want ONE line of text, not two. If I make the size barely large enough to completely display the footer's page number, then the two additional lines of text slide on over to the next page. But two things happen in this case:ġ - I get TWO additional lines of text instead of the one I want so that it lines up with the text on the next pageĢ - The footer area becomes too small to display the page number in it (it cuts off the number). If I uncheck that and scale the height down, then I can get the are above it to fill with text. Currently I have the footer set to AutoFit height. I've played with the footer some and it's strange. The footer uses the same size font as the main text (10 points) and the same font as well. The header uses a different font and a slightly smaller font size. a few pages into a chapter, for example). The poor alignment is NOT occurring between pages with different page styles, but within a series of pages all with the same page style (i.e. I've played with all the settings mentioned here (and then some) and I cannot get the bottoms of some pages to align. A Character style in use will normally maifest as a change in the name of selected type, or an alteration of type size or style, indicated on theformatting bar by such a change in text or shading of a button. The Para style in use is shown towards top left of screen on the formatting bar. How to know which is in use? The Page style in use for current page is shown one third of way across the Status Bar at bottom of screen. Note that there are several Default styles there is a default Para style, a Default Page style and a default Character style. Page styles do not affect text flow that I know of,so I suspect the problem is in your Default para style. These affect the way paras are split between pages. Adjust settings under Options: "Do not split paragraph", "Keep with next paragraph", "Widow control", "Orphan control". Click on first icon from left for Para styles, right click on Default and select Text Flow tab. Use F11 or (/Format /Styles and Formatting. How are you marking your paragraphs? Are you using the conventional indent, with paragraphs spaced at conventional line spacing, or are you using the modern tendency (yuck!) where your paragraphs flush left on their first line, set off from the para before by a line or white space?Įdit: You may need to check some settings in your paragraph styles, particularly Default. But in each case, the extra space on the bottom of the page is always in the DEFAULT page format that I had set up.Īny help on solving this issue would be greatly appreciated. I am also using a few different page styles (for example, the first page in a chapter does not display the header, but does the footer, which has the page number in it - and blank pages display neither the header nor the footer at all). I would really like to even all these pages up, but I cannot seem to find a way.įYI - These pages also have both a header and a footer on them (if that matters, I do not know). In these cases it is like an invisible (and inaccessible) space has been added that shoves the next line of text onto the next page. However, in some cases the text on the right page is not even at the bottom with text on the left page. However, I have run into an issue that I have not been able to properly resolve. For the most part, it has been a great experience. I am in the process of doing the interior layout for a fairly large novel (over 400 pages) using Writer.
